Kenya
General Information
The Republic Kenya "Jamhuri ya Kenya" lies halfway at the east coast of Africa across the equator, next to the Indian Ocean. With it's 582.650 square kilometers Kenya is sixteen times the size of the Netherlands.Neighboring countries to the north are Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan, at the western border lies Uganda and Lake Victoria and in the south Kenya borders their neighbor country Tanzania.
Lowlands can only be found along the Indian ocean and the coastline is mostly formed by sandy beaches. The well known Great Rift Valley was created when several millions of years ago the East African highlands were literally ripped apart. This wide cliff is part of the big slenk, that runs from Lebanon to Mozambique. The Great Rift Valley is an area of contrasts were certain parts are very fertile (at Lake Naivasha) while others are very dry and only good for livestock farming. In this area you can find many salt lakes and dried out volcanos. South of the Great Rift Valley you can see the cliff like character, while you can see thousands of meters into the deep between Nairobi and Naivasha, were you can also see the other side of the cliff which is hardly anywhere wider then 45 kilometers.
